The Week in Review ~ 4.9.2012

Hey, moms are busy people!  And in the midst of all the chaos, who’s got time to keep up with the ever-evolving (yet important) world of politics?  At MomStop, we keep track of the 5 biggest political stories each week so you don’t have to.  These are the stories that the ‘people-in-the-know’ are talking about!  So grab some coffee (the Bailey’s is optional) and pull up a chair, because here we go…

Follow MomThink on Facebook and Twitter for updates and more information…

recent topics include national security and Obamacare’s infamous Individual Mandate.  How can we ensure America’s security against foreign threats?  Will the Supreme Court uphold this fundamental change in the relationship between government and her people?   Join us at Momthink!

ObamaCare – What If…? - With a June deadline looming for the U.S. Supreme Court to decide the fate of ObamaCare, the folks over at MomThink.org have started a discussion as to the most likely outcomes, and what it will all mean for American families trying to deal with the ever-increasing costs of healthcare.  To participate in the discussion, you can join the nearly 300,000 people who have ‘Liked’ MomThink’s Facebook page, and help be part of the solution.  The rhetoric was ratcheted up a few notches last week when President Obama (to the dismay of even some liberal proponents of ObamaCare) publicly called out the Supreme Court as a group of unelected people (more on that in a moment).  Regardless of what happens in the Supreme Court this summer, most Americans realize that the current crop of solutions (including ObamaCare and the individual mandate) are not going to wholly ‘fix’ the existing problems.  That’s where organizations like MomThink.org come in – Don’t sit back and allow others to make decisions that will affect your families for generations.  Become a part of the solution!

Number of Americans Not Working at All-Time High - The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its March unemployment figures last week, showing a drop in the overall unemployment rate from 8.3% (from the previous month) to 8.2%.  That would indicate that the U.S. economy is headed in the right direction, right?  Well, not exactly…  Unfortunately, as we previously explained HERE, the monthly BLS ‘Employment Report’ (and its accompanying ‘unemployment rate’) does not take into consideration the number of Americans who have left the workforce and/or have simply given up on looking for a job.  In fact, as demonstrated in this graph, the number of Americans no longer in the workforce is at an all-time high (88 million), up nearly 10% since Obama took office.  Is this the ‘fundamental transformation’ of America that Barack Obama spoke about just four years ago…?

Federal Judge Strikes Back at Obama - President Obama caused yet another national controversy last week when he took to the microphones in the Rose Garden and proceeded to rip into the idea that the Supreme Court may actually declare ObamaCare unconstitutional.  Following Obama’s very public assertions that it would be ‘unprecedented’ for the Supreme Court to find that the new health care law violates the U.S. Constitution, a federal judge shot back, ordering Attorney General Eric Holder and the Justice Department to explain the president’s comments “in detail.”  Judge Jerry Smith, a Reagan appointee, referencing the fact that it has been the purview of federal courts for over 200 years to review the constitutionality of legislation, told Obama Administration attorneys that they had 48 hours to draft a letter explaining Obama’s comments.  Judge Smith stated, “The letter needs to be at least three pages, single spaced, no less and it needs to be specific. It needs to make specific reference to the president’s statements.”  The Justice Department did, in fact, complete its homework assignment and actually handed it in on time, albeit only 2 1/2 pages long…

U.S. Department of Energy Offers $100K Prize to Create Mobile Apps…(That Already Exist) - You really can’t make this stuff up… In its ongoing pursuit of ‘green energy alternatives,’ President Obama’s Energy Department announced last week that it is offering $100,000 for any software developers who can come up with mobile applications that monitor the amount of energy consumers are using.  The problem?  There’s already an app for thatseveral, actually.  The move follows other alternative energy failures such as Solyndra and the Chevy Volt, and is simply the latest example of the bloated, nanny-state bureaucracy mentality that seems to permeate the federal government, and particularly this administration — After all, why have one hammer that costs $800 when you can have two at twice the price, right?

Obama Warns GOP Budget Would Make Weather Prediction Less Accurate - Last week, we brought you the story of how President Obama’s 2013 Budget was summarily voted down in the House of Representatives by a vote of 414-0.  Shortly thereafter, the House approved the $3.5 trillion budget put forth by Wisconsin Republican, Paul Ryan, by a vote of 228-191.  Obama wasted no time criticizing the Ryan Plan this week, going so far as to claim that it would result in dirtier air, water and food, as well as ‘less accurate’ weather forecasts.  That’s right – the leader of the free world has been reduced to accusing Republican lawmakers of wanting to kill more Americans (and have them get sunburned in the meantime)… So much for the President’s call for ‘humility and civility’ last year.  Stay tuned and stay engaged.
