The Week in Review ~ 2.20.2012

Hey, moms are busy people!  And in the midst of all the chaos, who’s got time to keep up with the ever-evolving (yet important) world of politics?  At MomStop, we keep track of the 5 biggest political stories each week so you don’t have to.  These are the stories that the ‘people-in-the-know’ are talking about!  So grab some coffee (the Bailey’s is optional) and pull up a chair, because here we go…

Are We on the Verge of World War III? - The folks at MomThink.org have recently been focused in on issues of national security and how events across the globe are impacting and shaping America’s role in the new century.  And while our economic troubles at home – higher gas prices, the soaring cost of food, continued economic stagnation, etc – make it easy to ignore the goings on ‘over there,’ alarm bells sounded last week when what was described by U.S. officials as ‘a covert war of assassinations’ began to escalate between Israel and Iran.  This centuries-old conflict appears to be reaching new levels of uncertainty, as Israel remains resolute in its mission to prevent the Iranians from obtaining a nuclear weapon.  Then, over the weekend, ‘key officials’ within the Obama Administration began to express a collective belief that military action against Iran is becoming increasingly likely.  How will this conflict affect my family and my children’s future?  Continue to follow MomThink on Facebook and Twitter for updates and more information…

Obama’s 2013 Budget Released - On February 13, 2012, President Obama released his 2013 proposed annual budget, complete with spending/revenue projections for the next 10 years.  The problem?  As Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) so eloquently explains here, Obama’s proposed budget does nothing to decrease America’s unsustainable deficit-spending over the next year, much less the next 10 years.  In fact, as Congressman Ryan points out in this clip, the President’s budget (if adopted) would add over $11 trillion to our already massive $15 trillion+ national debt over the next decade.  An excellent in-depth analysis of the President’s proposed budget from the Heritage Foundation can be found here.  Oh, and remember back in 2008 when (then candidate) Barack Obama called George W. Bush “irresponsible” and “unpatriotic” for amassing $4 trillion worth of debt over 8 years? Well, just in case you forgot… –> YouTube: Obama calls Bush ‘unpatriotic’ in 2008.

Nanny State Gone Wild - File this one under “Dude, where’s my country?”… Public school officials in North Carolina confiscated a preschool student’s lunchbox and forced her to eat chicken nuggets when they discovered that the child’s homemade lunch “didn’t meet USDA standards for healthfulness.”  What kind of junk did her mother pack for her that day, you ask…?  Answer:  A turkey & cheese sandwich, a banana, potato chips and apple juice.  No, for real.  The story has sparked outrage all across the nation and dominated the airwaves of the Rush Limbaugh radio program nearly all week.  Read the full story –> Here.  (And watch out for those ‘nanny-state enthusiasts’ — coming to a school near you!)

Congresswoman Maxine Waters – Off Her Meds & Unhinged - Video surfaced this week of Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) speaking to a Democrat state party convention in San Diego, wherein Waters unceremoniously ripped into Speaker of the House, John Boehner, and GOP Majority Leader, Eric Cantor.  Evidently, Congresswoman Waters, caught up in the liberal euphoria of being back home in the People’s Republic of California, decided to go ‘off script’ and began screeching out little nuggets to the crowd such as this: “Don’t ever let me see again, in life, those Republicans in our hall, on our screens, talking about anything. These are demons!”  Here’s the charming video… YouTube: Maxine Waters Calls GOP ‘Demons’  Apparently, Miss Maxine didn’t get President Obama’s memo following the tragic shooting of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in Tucson, Arizona, last year.  Remember this…? YouTube: Obama Calls for Civility  Yes, so much for that ‘new tone.’

ObamaCare – Finding Out “What’s in There” - During the intense debate in March 2010 over the enactment of ObamaCare, former Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, famously told a group of supporters, “We have to pass the Bill so that you can find out what’s in it…”  Well, nearly 2 years later, America is finally finding out…  Controversy erupted last week over the Obama Administration’s newly pronounced mandate (part of ObamaCare) which would force religious institutions, in violation of their religious beliefs, to provide and pay for abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives and sterilization.  Although the Obama Administration promptly attempted to announce a hollow “accommodation” for some of these religious organizations, the Catholic Church was having none of it.  Stay tuned, and stay engaged…
